To change your nickname, you have to keep playing through MyCareer a bit till your character can make it in the NBA. This is right after completing the Summer League quest in MyCareer. Now, head into The City and pull up the main menu. Once the menu comes up, tab through the options till you reach the last one called Options/Quit. Under the Options/Quit window, on the left-hand side, click on Settings. Over here, you can now change your Secondary Nickname. You can only toggle through the preexisting names, but you can put your name for the other option like Social Media Handle name and change the Jersey number. Once you are done, click the back button to save your changes and go back to the main menu.
Now every time you play MyCareer, you can hear the commentators mention you by your new nickname. If you wish to change your character in-game name entirely, then you will have to load a fresh game to start over.
